Titanic Cities: a network to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Titanic
Cherbourg has decided to join together with the other towns that will be celebrating the centenary of the Titanic’s voyage: Belfast, Liverpool, Southampton, Halifax, Cobh and New York. These cities, each with their own links to the life of the liner, will sign a partnership charter by which they agree to work together on a programme of commemorations. The idea is to work on elaborating and promoting a communal programme of events in order to link together the various celebrations that will be organised for 2012. The Titanic Cities network will be made a reality in May 2011 with the launch of an official web site. At the same time, links are being created between the museums in the different towns (in particular the Museum of the Sea in Cherbourg), allowing the exchange of information, documents and even photos.

The history of each of the towns in the Titanic Cities network is closely linked to the ship: Liverpool, location of the transatlantic company White Star Line’s headquarters, Belfast, where she was built, Southampton, her port of departure, Cherbourg, her first stop-over (the only one on the continent), Cobh (Cork, Ireland), her second and last stop-over, Halifax (Novia Scotia, Canada), where most of the bodies found at sea were buried and New York, the ships final destination which was never reached.
